Unul dintre cele mai scumpe filme din istoria cinematografiei, Waterworld este un science-fiction a cărui acţiune se petrece undeva într-un viitor îndepărtat şi înfricoşător când Pământul este acoperit în totalitate de apă, iar oamenii încearcă să supravieţuiască aşa cum pot. Unul dintre aceştia este Mariner, un războinic dur care s-a adaptat la mediu dezvoltându-şi un fel de bronhii. El navighează pe apele nesfârşite pe o barcă rudimentară şi supravieţuieşte din vânzarea unor plante cu efecte magice oamenilor de pe o insulă izolată. Considerandu-l mutant aceştia îl vor face prizonier
